The Saltmakers

THE BEGINNING

In 2011, Peter Burt felt the call of home that many Newfoundlanders feel after time away. By then his resume included some of the finest restaurants across Canada as well as kitchens in Australia, China and Spain. While Chef de cuisine at Raymonds Restaurant in St. John’s, Peter began perfecting his method of making sea salt.

“As Newfoundlanders we’re surrounded by salt water. Why hadn’t we done this before?” he asked himself.

THE MOVE

In 2017, Peter and his partner Robin Crane moved to historic Bonavista and the Newfoundland Salt Company found a permanent home in the historic Arthur Sweetland Shop on Church Street.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

“I wanted the name to be simple and direct. I make salt. It’s from Newfoundland,” Peter says.

He and Robin want to share their crafted sea salt with those who crave quality, purity and outstanding flavour. It’s perfectly flakey, and a superb gift for those who enjoy cooking at home.

MEET THE SALTMAKERS

Robin Crane + Peter Burt

Peter and Robin were both born and raised in Newfoundland, but spent most of their 20s and 30s away. They dated when they were in high school only to reconnect 20 years later, after each felt the call of home. Peter and Robin began to make sea salt in 2011 and formed the Newfoundland Salt Company in early 2012.

Through trial and error, Peter refined his method of salt making at Raymonds restaurant where he was chef. Robin has an extensive retail and customer service background, and has helped shape the company into what it is today.

They began to sell their first batches of salt at the St. John’s Farmers Market, to specialty shops, and chefs before they relocated to Bonavista in 2017.
